When cold, many of us drink alcohol in an effort to stay warm thinking that it will increase our body temperature. Is this the case though?
Well, actually it’s not. It’s the exact opposite.
In fact, drinking alcohol actually lowers the core temperature of your body and increases your risk for hypothermia. The reason why we feel warm when drinking alcohol in cold weather, is because our blood/alcohol level increases while our blood vessels dilate and send warm blood away from the core and towards our skin. This effect though is only temporary and by drinking to stay warm in cold, you are actually putting yourself in danger!
