Why Do Mosquitoes Prefer Some Over Others?

It’s one of the fundamental laws of life: mosquitoes prefer some humans over others. It’s an undeniable fact and if you are on the “mosquito-friendly” side, it can get pretty annoying.

But why is that?

What is it that mosquitoes “like” and go after certain people? (the article continues after the ad)

There is a lot of ongoing research on the subject and although scientists have yet to conclude, here are some of their findings so far:

  • Mosquitos prefer people with high concentrations of steroids or cholesterol on their skin surface
  • They target people who produce excess amounts of certain acids, such as uric acid
  • They are attracted by carbon dioxide and, hence, prefer people who emit large quantities
  • They go after people with excessive amount of lactic acid produced by the sweat glands, so if you are a sweaty person… well, good luck with that
