The title may look as if it’s a clickbait, but it’s not: Bugs Bunny once saved the life of its voice actor, Mel Blanc.
Here’s the incredible story.
In an interview to Radio Lab, Noel Blanc, the son of Mel Blanc – the voice actor of Bugs Bunny, revealed a fascinating story on how a car accident in 1961 injured his father as he was driving home from San Francisco. Mel Blanc’s Aston Matin collided with another car on Dead Man’s Curve. Blanc survived the accident but he slipped into a coma. Being in coma for two whole weeks, the doctors as well as Noel and his mother were desperately trying to revive him, but to no avail. (the article continues after the ad)
One day though, one of the doctors walked into the room and tried a completely new and different approach. He went to his bed and asked, “Bugs Bunny, how are you doing today?”
There was a pause but then, in a weak voice, came the response in a voice anyone in the world would recognize.
“Myeeeeh. What’s up doc?”
The doctor then asked Tweety if he was there too.
“I tot I taw a puddy tat,” was the reply.
That was it. Astonishingly, Mel Blanc was finally awake! It took him seven more months to recover but he was finally revived from the coma.
During that period and while in the hospital, he even voiced Barney Rubble in the first episodes of The Flintstones with a microphone dangling above his bed.
