Why Stuffed Eggs Are Called ‘Deviled Eggs’?

I have to admit that i love my deviled eggs – that egg yolk, mayonnaise and mustard paste is quite the filling. But even though i’ve been enjoying them for years, i didn’t know the exact reasons of why do we call them ‘deviled eggs’.

So, i decided to look into it and i have the answer for you.

People have been enjoying stuffed eggs by as early as the 4th century A.D.. But they were much different from what we are used today. During those times, boiled eggs were seasoned with olive oil, pine nuts, lovage (a parsley-like herb), honey and vinegar. By the 15th century, stuffed eggs made it across much of Europe but the paste recipe was changed. (the article continues after the ad)

This new recipe included cilantro, onion juice, coriander, a fish sauce called murri and they were literally covered in pepper. This combination was quite spicy thus making the eggs so hot that a single bite reminded people the fires of hell, hence the name deviled eggs.
