Ethiopia Just Celebrated The New Year… 2009!

Yes, you’ve read that right; Ethiopia has entered 2009 just 9 months ago.

In Ethiopia, the New Year is celebrated on September 11th and the calendar is seven years behind. Hence, in September 11th 2016, Ethiopians celebrated the coming of… 2009!

This is due to alternate calculations in determining the date of the annunciation of the birth of Jesus Christ. According to Ahmed Zakaria, professor of history at Addis Ababa University, the reason is that “the Roman Church amended their calculation in 500 AD – adjusting it by seven or eight years.” (the article continues after the ad)

Ethiopia, which was isolated at the time, didn’t adopt the change and that is why Ethiopian calendar is now seven years later than the Roman calendar.
