Which Is The Right Way To Have Your Martini: Shaken Or Stirred?

A martini is usually made with 5 parts gin (or vodka if you are having a vodka martini) to 1 part dry vermouth. But the ratio is just a matter of preference. What’s not a matter of preference, is the preparation method.

As it turns out, James Bond has been ordering his Martinis wrong. The right way to have your Martini is stirred, not shaken. And this is why.

As a general rule of thumb, cocktails that contain only spirits should be stirred as this does not “bruise” the alcohol and allows for more clarity and texture. On the other hand, cocktails that contain juices (such as lemon/lime, orange or pineapple juices) and syrups should be shaken so the ingredients are better incorporated. (the article continues after the ad)

So, martinis, old fashioneds, negronis and every other cocktail that contains only spirits should always be stirred while whiskey sours, margaritas, mai tais and every cocktail that contains juices should be shaken.
