How Is It Possible For Old Films To Be Remastered In High Definition?

Nowadays more and more classic films are being remastered in 4K but have you ever wondered how is that possible? I mean, how can a movie that’s been filmed in 1965 be remastered in high definition?

Well, we’ve looked into it and it’s actually pretty simple! As it turns out, it all has to do with the film.

You see, old movies were shot using film, ie 35mm film. The thing about that 35mm film is that it has incredibly high resolution – around the equivalent of 20 mega pixels camera. A 1080p or a 4K movie is only about 2 and 4 mega pixels resolution so, in order to release the movie in high definition, they only have to transfer the film to a digital format and then remaster it (do some image post processing to make it look more modern). Done, the movie is now in 4K!
