The Reason Why Pluto Is Still A Planet In New Mexico

In 2006, the International Astronomical Union denoted Pluto as a dwarf-planet (instead of planet) because it didn’t meet all the criteria as described by the official definition. By it seems that not all of us agree with this decision.

In New Mexico, Pluto is, by law, still a planet!

You see, the IAU’s decision was a considered a blow to the memory of Clyde Tombaugh, the man who discovered Pluto while working at an observatory in Las Cruces, New Mexico in 1930. He was New Mexico’s pride and that’s why the state decided to strike back: the state’s House of Representatives voted that Pluto is a planet whenever it passes over New Mexico.

As simple as that.

I knew states had a lot of power, but being able to declare what is a planet and what’s not, is beyond me.
