The Stoned Ape Theory: Did We Become What We Are Because Our Ancestors Loved Magic Mushrooms?

As strange as it may sound, there is funny theory that adds magic mushrooms into the human evolution equation.

The Stoned Ape Theory, as its inventor Terence McKenna cleverly likes to call it, is a theory that states that our advanced human evolution was a result of the consumption of magic mushrooms by our primate ancestors.

According to McKenna, as Homo Sapiens began moving throughout Africa after the last ice age, around 18,000 years ago, it switched to a more omnivorous diet. This switch, led to following herds of animals for food, and subsequently, finding magic mushrooms in poop and adding them to its diet. (the article continues after the ad)

Because this was done in small doses, people were not reaching the hallucination point but instead, they were reaching a point of heightened senses and boosted energy. This improved visual and senses were great for spotting predators and for being more aware of approaching danger. (Remember when we talked about how Jaguars Get High?)

But this, according to McKenna, let to other developments as well as language development saw immense growth during this period while this is the reason which led humanity to abstract concepts.

Here’s a video of Terence McKenna talking about his theory:
