Even though a global study by the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre in Australia found that women now drink as much alcohol as men, women in general feel the effects of alcohol quite faster than men do. But why is that? Why do women react quicker to liquor?
Most people would argue that this has to do with body size but the truth is that, even when matched for weight and height, women will get drunk faster than men. Well, now we know, as a new research sheds light on the actual reasons why this ‘paradox’ is happening.
Here’s how it goes. (the article continues after the ad)
According to a study published in the The New England Journal of Medicine, the reasons are pure biological. Women have actually a higher ratio of fat to water, meaning that they have less water. Because of this, the alcohol in their bodies remains concentrated and therefore, they more easily reach a higher blood alcohol concentration.
In addition, enzymes also play a huge role. In women, gastric alcohol dehydrogenase, our body’s compound that actually breaks down alcohol, is almost half in what they are in men. As a result, women metabolize less alcohol before it actually reaches their blood stream and that’s why they are more sensitive to alcohol than men.
