As a part of its “Your Questions” session, McDonald’s Canada released a video (it’s at the end of this article) that shows how Chicken McNuggets are made. No, they are not made from that pink stuff, but that’s not the point here.
The most interesting thing we’ve learned from that video is that McDonald’s chicken nuggets shapes are not random, they come in four distinct shapes: The bell, the ball, the boot and the bow tie (aka the bone).
As shown in the video, the shapes are pressed out with a rolling cookie cutter. In the picture below, note that in the bottom row is the bow tie (bone) shape, followed boots, then balls and finally, the bells: (the article continues after the ad)
The reason behind the standard shapes and sizes is for both cooking times and experience. By having them all the same shape and size, they ensure consistent cooking times but, by having more than one shape, they also make them geared toward kids.
“Our Chicken McNuggets are shaped uniquely for kids and kids at heart — it makes dipping more fun!” the company wrote.
But why have just four shapes?
According to McDonald’s, “three would’ve been too few. Five would’ve been, like, wacky.”
So now you know. Next time you’ll order McNuggets make sure to check out to see if you have all four shapes.
