You may be surprised to know that UPS trucks (almost) never turn left! And as it turns out, perhaps neither should you either. Here’s why.
Data shows that left-hand turns are dangerous, because of oncoming traffic and waste fuel as they force you to wait. So UPS trucks avoid left-hand turns whenever possible even if it means going around the block. The fascinating fact is that they’ve been doing it for a decade now as UPS says it actually makes deliveries quicker by shaving 100 million miles a year from their routes. It also eliminates emissions equivalent to 21,000 cars!
Sounds too good to be true? Well, this is why Mythbusters are for. Check out their right-turn only mini-myth episode: (the article continues after the ad)
Even though Mythbusters didn’t manage to save time on their deliveries, the right-turn only delivery route was much more fuel efficient.
When asked by ABC on how often UPS drivers turn right, a driver replied:
“A guesstimate, I would probably say 90%. I mean we really, really hate left turns at UPS.”
Of course, there are exceptions and UPS drivers do turn left when is easier and faster but the golden rule is “always right” and it’s the preferred way the UPS software uses to map out routes.
Data analysis at its best!
