The Doctors Who Are 4x More Likely To Commit Suicide Than The General Population

Several studies have identified a link between suicide and occupation. What’s quite strange though is that the occupation that holds the no. 1 position in suicides in the healthcare professions are the veterinarians.

The rate of suicide in the veterinary profession has been pegged as close to twice that of the dental profession, more than twice that of the medical profession and 4 times the rate in the general population.

There are quite a few speculations but no one knows for sure why this is the case with veterinarians:
– Many veterinarians work in relative isolation, an environment that can cause depression
– They have access to and knowledge to drugs for anesthesia and euthanasia, something that increases the potential for misuse
– Veterinarians are commonly required to engage in the active ending of animal life. This active participation may alter views on death and the sanctity of human life.
