The Time Burger King Introduced ‘Left-Handed Whopper’ Only For Left-Handed Customers

I’m sure you’ve all read some very creative hoaxes on April Fools’ Day but this one by Burger King is hands down my all time favorite. The story was published on April 1st 1998, back when people were still reading newspapers and it convinced hundreds of people that a burger can actually differ for left-handed people.

With a full page ad in USA Today, Burger King announced that it would start serving its famous Whopper specially designed for the 1.4 million left-handed customers that visit their restaurants throughout the US every day: the Left-Handed Whopper.

How did they do it? By just rotating the burger! Here are the details: (the article continues after the ad)

The burger contained the very same ingredients but it was rotated a full 180° to better suit and offer a better grip on the bun to the left-handed consumer. In addition, all the condiments were also rotated so the left-handed experience was significantly improved and all the sesame seeds were strategically placed to minimize the loss during consumption:

The most incredible thing about this story though is that people actually believed it and thousands of them started asking for the “left” Whopper. Even right-handed folks were clarifying their handedness just in case they mistakenly got the Left-handed Whopper.

I guess people will never cease to amaze us.
