The Brazilian prison of Santa Rita Do Sapucai found a clever and innovative way to help its inmates reduce their sentences and contribute to the society; they bike to help power a nearby town!
Through this eco-friendly program, prisoners can shave their sentences by using some stationary bikes hooked up to car batteries. As the inmates keep the pedal going, the car batteries are charged. The charged-up batteries are then used by the Santa Rita do Sapucai municipality to illuminate street lamps.
Volunteers earn one hour off their sentence for every hour they spend on the bikes. Two months into the program and one inmate had already reduced his sentence by 20 days, and his weight by 9 pounds! (the article continues after the ad)
“It’s a win-win situation,” says the prison’s director, Gilson Rafael Silva. “People who normally are on the margins of society are contributing to the community and not only do they get out sooner in return, they also get their self-esteem back.”
